The Opportunity

  • The objective of the program was to provide training and resources to Brazilian educators who teach kindergarten to grade twelve to create inclusive, welcoming and innovative classroom learning for students.
  • NC partnered with Fanshawe College to conduct teacher training for approximately 100 educators of kindergarten to grade 12, half studying at NC, and the other half at Fanshawe.
  • In order to be accepted into this unique program, teachers were required, based on their own professional experience, to develop a proposal for a pedagogical intervention project – to be completed while in Canada – in order to improve their teaching practice.

Our Approach

  • Collaborated with Fanshawe College to develop a customized curriculum for the selected educators.
  • Highlighted best practices of the Canadian education system and teacher methodology; it also developed their cross-cultural skills through social and cultural activities, in addition to the academic programming.
  • Included two weeks of English as a Second Language skill development, two weeks of experiential learning endeavors and four weeks of customized professional development focusing on student-centered approaches, the inclusive classroom, classroom management and technology.
  • Offered significant portion of the program in Portuguese.
  • Developed the participants’ teaching skills by focusing on classroom management and learner-centered approaches.

Partner Outcomes and Success

  • The program was offered in 2019 with 50 participants and in 2023 with 49 participants at Niagara College. During the same periods, an equal number of participants joined our partner, Fanshawe College, for their training program.
  • The Brazilian teachers received a Statement of Participation upon completion of the program.
  • Participants shared their pedagogical intervention projects that were based on their own teaching experience and intended to improve their skills in the classroom.

The program is complete, rich, and diverse. There is value in field trips, cultural programs, classes, language learning.”

“Meeting and living with professionals from all over the country, in an intense way, so that bonds and communities of learning and exchange were created.”

“The exchange with the teaching experience and the different realities among us, Brazilian colleagues; visits to Canadian schools and the possibility of talking to students, teachers and specialists in schools.”

“There were many rich experiences, visiting schools, visiting tourist and entertainment sites increasing socialization and knowledge of local culture, knowing the projects and reality of education in other places in Brazil, exchanging with colleagues about education with Canadian education as inspiration, and evaluating what is possible to apply in Brazil or not, the attention of CAPES and other professionals who lead us, it was all incredible.”
